Summer Internship

Last Thursday I was offered an internship with Dow AgroSciences in Indianapolis. I’m so excited!

I only changed my major to Agricultural communication at the beginning of this year. I’ve already been networking and working hard to learn more about this great field.

Now, I have the opportunity to learn a great deal about Public Affairs. This is a career that I definitely have an interest in pursuing. There is a possibility to go this route with the Air Force and be a reserve member.

While my ultimate dream job isn’t related to PA, I’m really excited to get out of my comfort zone and learn a new field. Eventually, I think it would be amazing to be an editor/journalist for a horse publication.

While this internship doesn’t directly support that goal, it will give me a great insight into other areas of ag comm that interest me.

The timing and place couldn’t be more perfect. My sister will be traveling abroad this summer, therefore in need of someone to sublet her apartment. This works perfectly because she lives less than 20 miles from the Dow Ag Compound.

This internship is also a great opportunity to network with Dow Ag employees, and it could result in a future job.

I’m so glad that I’ve been fortunate enough to get this internship, and I will continue to tell you all about it as the summer passes. My official start date is May 12!

An Official Writer

Hello all! Hard to believe, huh? Two posts in one day! I very nearly forgot that I made a promise in one of my earlier blogs. I have now officially become a published writer. =) Both my stories were published in “The Communicator.” It is an online newsletter for the Department of Communication at Purdue University. I am very pleased to be able to share them with you.

A Love/Hate Relationship

For the past few years I have had a love/hate relationship with running. (Generally more hating than loving). It seems, at times, no matter how good of shape I’m in…I still have piss poor runs. Why is that?

For example, last Monday I went on a run that nearly killed me. I couldn’t breathe, my feet ached, and I wanted to throw up the entire time. The next night I ran faster, harder and longer. I was a machine.

What is it that causes these crazy changes? Even when I’m in great running shape, I still have this problem. Right now I’m chalking it up to the fact that I’m “trying” to be a runner. (Last year I was a one).

I’ve also been having a big problem with one of my ankles. Right below my ankle bone on the inside of my heel gives me trouble. It usually feels as if I have a scratch or cut that is being pulled apart. There is, however, no such cut on my foot. Fortunately, getting new running shoes has greatly helped this problem, but if anyone has any insight, I would definitely appreciate it.

I guess since all I have talked about is the hate part of this relationship, I should probably mention the loving side.

I may not always love how I feel during the run, but after is always great. There’s a small pride at accomplishing something that is usually difficult for me.

I’ve also noticed in the past that when I run consistently, I don’t get sick as often, I have a higher metabolism, and I don’t feel as tired during the day.

Now, I wouldn’t consider myself a vain person, but I do love what running does to my body. My legs get nice and tone and the tummy gets a little flatter; what girl wouldn’t love that?

It is now time for a run, and I’m really curious to see how this one will be today. It’s always interesting to see on which side of the spectrum I fall in my relationship with running.

Cricket Lullabys

These past few nights I’ve been hearing something I’ve been missing over the winter months: Crickets. I know most people think crickets are annoying, but I have to disagree.

To me, crickets are a sign of spring and summer. I’m sure winter has its perks, but I generally can’t find them.

Spring has been taking its sweet time to hit Purdue, but I have been very happy to hear the early signs of it.

It’s nice to fall asleep to the lullaby of crickets.

Penelope

Hello readers!

I don’t have enough time to write you one of my short stories, but I would like to quickly share with you my views on a movie I recently watched.

Penelope.

I must say, I had not seen any previews for the film before watching it. I had to rely on trusty dusty imdb.com. I thought it looked cute, but the minute I saw James MacAvoy was in it, it was a done deal. In the words of Rosie O’Donnell, “What a cutie patootie!”

While he was very adorable in Chronicles of Narnia, I much prefer the non goat-eared version.

The movie itself was also adorable. It featured a surprisingly non-gothic Christina Ricci and the very funny Catherine O’Hara.

It was very nice to watch a movie that wasn’t just made for pure entertainment. It had a very good and much forgotten message. Love yourself! I think we need to be reminded of that every now and again.

It also reminds us that it’s what’s on the inside that counts. Now I know that we don’t walk up to someone in a bar and say, “Gee, you look like you’ve got a great personality…can I buy you a drink?” Looks and attraction are an important part of the package. It is, however, important to remember that there is so much more.

If you’re a guy: Take your significant other to go see it. You might not be completely impressed, but it could always win you some points. (And what guy can’t use a few extra points here and there?)

If you’re a girl: Grab your friends, go to dinner, and finish the evening with Penelope. You won’t regret it.

Ok readers, I must bid you all goodnight. I do hope you take my advice and go see the movie.
